History Fact:
West Brookfield was first settled in 1664 and was officially incorporated in 1848, splitting off from Brookfield
Lucy Stone was born in West Brookfield, a prominent American suffragist. She was the wife of abolitionist Henry Brown Blackwell (1825-1909) (the brother of Elizabeth Blackwell) and the mother of Alice Stone Blackwell, another prominent suffragette, journalist and human rights defender. Stone was best known for being the first recorded American woman to keep her own last name upon marriage and being the first woman in Massachusetts to receive a college degree.
Noah Webster also published his dictionary in West brookfield.
